Future of TV - Wall St. Analysts Meet Industry Executives - It's All About innovation and Disruption - Moving into the Next Wave

Gone is the status quo for TV as companies at all points on the entertainment value chain are vying for a piece of the global action. Consumer habits across various demographics are evolving driven by technology. The future of TV involves deep insight into both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of content production and distribution and the impact that the technologies of today and more importantly those of “tomorrow” will  have on the many competitive and high stakes business models in place today and anticipated for the future as companies shape their strategies in response to the changes. The future will be shaped in part by the myriad of devices and content vying for our attention as well as the rollout of faster broadband technologies, both wired and increasingly wireless, as we enter the next wave of the future. Our distinguished group of analysts and executives will discuss, debate and even challenge some of the basic premises that are important as we look to the future of TV in an informative and engaging panel.

Gene Munster is a managing partner and co-founder at Loup Ventures, a research-driven, early stage venture capital firm headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with offices in the New York area. Founded in 2017, Loup Ventures is pursuing The Future Perfect – an absolutely fantastic future created by the combination of virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and robotics. And research is in our blood. We publish research on the emergence of The Future Perfect, the themes driving it, and the companies making it a reality. Prior to Loup Ventures, Gene was a managing director and senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray where he covered technology companies including Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook. During his 21- year tenure, Gene received many acknowledgements including: Top Stock Picker from Forbes, Best on the Street from The Wall Street Journal, and was widely recognized for his work on Apple. Gene holds a bachelor's degree in finance and entrepreneurship from University of St. Thomas.

 

Justin Liu, Lead Engagement Manager, Media + Gaming, Akamai Technologies: Justin leads the technical consultant and professional services teams that support Akamai's Media and Gaming customers on the West Coast. He has extensive experience coordinating large scale online events, optimizing on-demand media applications, and securing complex workflows.  He has been the technical advisor for media clients whose focus content ranges from live sports to Hollywood movies.  In previous roles with Panasonic Avionics Corporation, he also worked intimately with in-flight entertainment defining media workflows and integrating large scale systems for encrypted private network streaming and wireless DRM.

 

Michael Pachter, Managing Director, Equity Research, Wedbush Securities; providing coverage across the Digital Media sector and Head of Research for the Private Shares Group. He has been recognized as StarMine’s “Top Earnings Estimator” year after year and “Best on the Street” by the Wall Street Journal. Michael brings over 20 years of experience as a financial professional to the Private Shares Group along with extensive knowledge across the social media sector in both public and private companies. Mr. Pachter holds an M.B.A. from the Anderson School at the University of California at Los Angeles, a juris doctor from Pepperdine University, an LL.M. in Taxation from the University of Florida, and a bachelor’s in Political Science from California State University, Northridge.

 

Darren Cross joined Maker Studios in 2013 as vice president of corporate strategy and business development. Focusing on developing strategic partnerships for Maker, creating and developing new lines of business, and incremental distribution opportunities. Darren remained throught the completion of the Disney acquisition and earnout at the end of 2016. Before joining Maker, Darren oversaw corporate strategy and business development for Blip Networks. Focused on fundraising, strategic partnerships, Blip’s original productions, and the company’s technology assets and various distribution platforms. Prior to Blip, Darren was the head of business development for Fandango, the nation’s leading moviegoer destination and was instrumental in extending the brand to new platforms, most notably leading strategy and execution of Fandango’s mobile and connected device efforts. Prior to Fandango, Darren was vice president of content acquisition and business development at ClickStar, a joint venture between Intel and Morgan Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment created to deliver first-run theatrical and home entertainment product to consumers via the open Internet. Darren holds a JD from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, and an MBA from UCLA's Anderson School of Management. Darren is a member of the State Bar of California.

 

Larry Namer, President & CEO, Metan Global Entertainment Group: An entertainment industry veteran with over 40 years professional experience in cable television, live events and new media, Larry Namer is a founding partner of Metan Global Entertainment Group (Metan), a venture created to develop and distribute entertainment content and media specifically for Chinese speaking audiences in China and abroad. An accomplished entrepreneur, Mr. Namer is the co-founder of E! Entertainment Television, a company now valued at over $3.5 billion USD, and the creator of several successful companies in the United States and overseas. Among those companies are Comspan Communications that pioneered Western forms of entertainment in the former Soviet Union, including the syndication of the popular soap opera Santa Barbara, which ran for 10 years in the region, and Steeplechase Media that served as the primary consultant to Microsoft’s MiTV for developing interactive TV applications. Steeplechase was also involved in the early development of  ITV programming, creating interactive episodes of Baywatch, Pacific Blue and over 250 episodes of Judge Judy. Mr. Namer was also the Primary Strategic Consultant to The Documentary Channel. A cable industry pioneer, Mr. Namer began his career in 1971 at Time Incorporated Manhattan Cable, and served as Vice President and General Manager of Valley Cable Television (VCTV) in Los Angeles, the nation’s first 61-channel two-way cable system. His vision and direction garnered VCTV several Emmy and Cable ACE award nominations, as well as recognition by Forbes magazine as the national model for local cable television programming. In 1989, he was awarded the prestigious President’s Award from the National Cable Television Association. Most recently, Mr. Namer was honored with the “Outstanding Contribution to Asian Television Award” at the 19th Asian Television Awards in Singapore. Mr. Namer is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on new technology and how it is fundamentally altering the business of international media and entertainment. Among the companies that have enlisted his expertise are Microsoft, Paul Allen’s Digeo, World Digital Media Group (a joint venture of Radio Shack), EchoStar and Sirius Radio network. Today, Mr. Namer serves as President/CEO, Metan.  Metan’s flagship series is Hello! Hollywood, a weekly entertainment news series tailored to Chinese audiences, offering up the latest in celebrity, pop culture and lifestyle news. Since its launch in summer 2009, the series is now available on over 40 television stations in China and six in North America reaching over one billion Mandarin speaking viewers. Hello! Hollywood’s premier content is also available on 10 of China’s top online portals, reaching more than four million viewers weekly, and recently was revamped for Metan’s new HOLLYWOOD CHANNEL on Tudou. Metan is currently adapting popular Western TV formats for localized versions, including Go Dance! from Ukraine and Elite Model Search. The company has also developed the original sitcom Return to Da Foo Tsun and the recently launched Web series Planet Homebuddies, that has garnered an online audience of over seven million only one month since its launch. Metan was instrumental in joining together top China production houses Mei Tian and H&R Century TV with Warner Brothers International Television Production and the creators of Gossip Girl to develop a groundbreaking new teen drama series for China, to which Metan is also a consultant. Recently, Metan and a coalition of North America’s top TV and film writers partnered to launch Metan Wen Zhi Ku, a joint venture linking Western writing talent with transmedia projects for the China market. He also serves as Senior Advisor, Strategic Development to Eurocinema On Demand and is the co-founder of MINGYIAN INC., a China brand management startup for Western celebrities and influencers.

 

Marty Shindler is CEO of The Shindler Perspective, a husband & wife consulting practice with Big 4 (C of PWC) professional service firm and top 5 (Sloan @ MIT) business school credentials. The firm has worked all along the entertainment and entertainment technology value chain, and as a result, has deep insight into the inner workings of the various industry segments and the many businesses and niches that intersect with the value chain. The practice consults on business, economic, strategic and operational matters in a diverse, but interconnected set of market segments and companies in areas such as development and previs, production, post production, distribution and exhibition for movies, TV and other content across a wide range of platforms, second screens and delivery methods.
