Future of TV - Wall St. Analysts Meet Industry Executives - It's All About innovation and Disruption - Moving into the Next Wave

Gone is the status quo for TV as companies at all points on the entertainment value chain are vying for a piece of the global action. Consumer habits across various demographics are evolving driven by technology. The future of TV involves deep insight into both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of content production and distribution and the impact that the technologies of today and more importantly those of “tomorrow” will  have on the many competitive and high stakes business models in place today and anticipated for the future as companies shape their strategies in response to the changes. The future will be shaped in part by the myriad of devices and content vying for our attention as well as the rollout of faster broadband technologies, both wired and increasingly wireless, as we enter the next wave of the future. Our distinguished group of analysts and executives will discuss, debate and even challenge some of the basic premises that are important as we look to the future of TV in an informative and engaging panel.

Gene Munster is a managing partner and co-founder at Loup Ventures, a research-driven, early stage venture capital firm headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with offices in the New York area. Founded in 2017, Loup Ventures is pursuing The Future Perfect – an absolutely fantastic future created by the combination of virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and robotics. And research is in our blood. We publish research on the emergence of The Future Perfect, the themes driving it, and the companies making it a reality. Prior to Loup Ventures, Gene was a managing director and senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray where he covered technology companies including Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook. During his 21- year tenure, Gene received many acknowledgements including: Top Stock Picker from Forbes, Best on the Street from The Wall Street Journal, and was widely recognized for his work on Apple. Gene holds a bachelor's degree in finance and entrepreneurship from University of St. Thomas.


Ben Bloom, Service Line Director, Technologies Media + Gaming, Akamai: Ben is the Director of professional services for Akamai’s Media and Entertainment clients. Currently in his eighth year at Akamai, Ben has worked behind the scenes to enable Akamai’s clients’ online broadcasts of major events (Super Bowl LI/L/XLIX, Vancouver/Sochi/Rio Olympic Games, 2016 Presidential Election/Inauguration, March Madness), the launches of a myriad of new OTT services, and uncountable sports events, game releases, and new site/app launches. Ben is recognized as an industry expert in online broadcasting and scaling internet applications, speaking at conferences such as Digital Hollywood, Storage Visions, Creative Storage Conference, vNAB, and Akamai Edge. He received his BS in Engineering as an inaugural graduate of Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering.


John Corser, VP Production, NBC Universal Cable Productions: John has a business approach to production challenges. He understands the “project mission” and incorporates it into the production and budget strategies. He is flexible and develops customized solutions to fit the dynamics and economics of the project.  He takes complexity and turns it into understandable and effective communications and collaborates closely to meet project needs. John is a Producer’s Council member of the Producer’s Guild of America.  He is an expert in production and has been a featured speaker on film production, digital workflow and cloud based production management. He has been a recurring speaker at the Digital Video Expo, the Sundance Film festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Digital Production Summit (NAB) and many other festivals and conferences. John’s projects have won numerous awards including an Emmy for “New approaches to Daytime Entertainment” 2010 and an Oscar nomination for the short film Most (2003). He has produced commercials, promotional films, music videos, feature films, dramatic television, Variety shows, events and educational films. His productions have spanned 20 countries and 5 continents. John has extensive experience managing productions both large and small with complex production challenges. John’s business and social networks span the globe. He is known for his professionalism, honesty and directness.  He is able to draw upon the best and brightest ensuring that the projects receive the highest quality, most effective production and deliver the intended outcomes.  John founded Corser, Inc. in 1993 as a media production company consulting on marketing, promotions and advertising. John helps clients effectively communicate their messages to their target audiences. He works with clients to design and execute proactive communication strategies that engage viewers, enhance message credibility, and improve business performance. Recently he has expanded the company to produce large corporate events. John founded FilmUtah in 2010 and DigitalUtah in 2013. FilmUtah/DigitalUtah is the Utah non-profit organization and promotional outlet for film, television and digital media professionals to showcase their services to the world. Larry Namer, President & CEO, Metan Global Entertainment Group: An entertainment industry veteran with over 40 years professional experience in cable television, live events and new media, Larry Namer is a founding partner of Metan Global Entertainment Group (Metan), a venture created to develop and distribute entertainment content and media specifically for Chinese speaking audiences in China and abroad. An accomplished entrepreneur, Mr. Namer is the co-founder of E! Entertainment Television, a company now valued at over $3.5 billion USD, and the creator of several successful companies in the United States and overseas. Among those companies are Comspan Communications that pioneered Western forms of entertainment in the former Soviet Union, including the syndication of the popular soap opera Santa Barbara, which ran for 10 years in the region, and Steeplechase Media that served as the primary consultant to Microsoft’s MiTV for developing interactive TV applications. Steeplechase was also involved in the early development of  ITV programming, creating interactive episodes of Baywatch, Pacific Blue and over 250 episodes of Judge Judy. Mr. Namer was also the Primary Strategic Consultant to The Documentary Channel. A cable industry pioneer, Mr. Namer began his career in 1971 at Time Incorporated Manhattan Cable, and served as Vice President and General Manager of Valley Cable Television (VCTV) in Los Angeles, the nation’s first 61-channel two-way cable system. His vision and direction garnered VCTV several Emmy and Cable ACE award nominations, as well as recognition by Forbes magazine as the national model for local cable television programming. In 1989, he was awarded the prestigious President’s Award from the National Cable Television Association. Most recently, Mr. Namer was honored with the “Outstanding Contribution to Asian Television Award” at the 19th Asian Television Awards in Singapore. Mr. Namer is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on new technology and how it is fundamentally altering the business of international media and entertainment. Among the companies that have enlisted his expertise are Microsoft, Paul Allen’s Digeo, World Digital Media Group (a joint venture of Radio Shack), EchoStar and Sirius Radio network. Today, Mr. Namer serves as President/CEO, Metan.  Metan’s flagship series is Hello! Hollywood, a weekly entertainment news series tailored to Chinese audiences, offering up the latest in celebrity, pop culture and lifestyle news. Since its launch in summer 2009, the series is now available on over 40 television stations in China and six in North America reaching over one billion Mandarin speaking viewers. Hello! Hollywood’s premier content is also available on 10 of China’s top online portals, reaching more than four million viewers weekly, and recently was revamped for Metan’s new HOLLYWOOD CHANNEL on Tudou. Metan is currently adapting popular Western TV formats for localized versions, including Go Dance! from Ukraine and Elite Model Search. The company has also developed the original sitcom Return to Da Foo Tsun and the recently launched Web series Planet Homebuddies, that has garnered an online audience of over seven million only one month since its launch. Metan was instrumental in joining together top China production houses Mei Tian and H&R Century TV with Warner Brothers International Television Production and the creators of Gossip Girl to develop a groundbreaking new teen drama series for China, to which Metan is also a consultant. Recently, Metan and a coalition of North America’s top TV and film writers partnered to launch Metan Wen Zhi Ku, a joint venture linking Western writing talent with transmedia projects for the China market. He also serves as Senior Advisor, Strategic Development to Eurocinema On Demand and is the co-founder of MINGYIAN INC., a China brand management startup for Western celebrities and influencers.


Lindsay A. Gardner, Chief Content Officer, Layer3TV: Lindsay Gardner’s 25 years of leadership in media and entertainment includes a combination of powerhouse television brands and digital start-ups.  He has a nearly unrivaled record of accomplishment in content distribution, the cornerstone of nearly every successful media strategy. Gardner serves as Chief Content Officer of Layer3TV where he is executing the next generation cable distributor’s content partnership strategy and acquisitions.  Layer3 TV is currently avalbale in the Washington, D.C. and Chicago metro-areas and offers subscribers superior entertainment, information and social experiences. He is also a Senior Advisor to Oaktree Capital Management, the Los Angeles-based private equity firm with $100 billion under management.  Since May 2010, he has pursued global buyout opportunities in the media sector. He is an independent director of IZEA (NASDAQ: IZEA) the Orlando-based leader in sponsored social media advertising. During the period 2007-2010, as a partner of New York-based MediaTech Capital Partners, Gardner partnered with large financial sponsors, including TPG, APAX, and Madison Dearborn, in bids for:  Bresnan Cable, Weather Channel Inc., Univision, and Premier Retail Networks, among others. He also co-founded and led through critical development stages several digital media companies. From 1999-2007, Gardner led distribution, sales and marketing for Fox Networks, today the most diverse, powerful and profitable US cable channel operator.  As President of Distribution, Gardner built Fox’s US channel portfolio from a handful of small networks into one of the industry’s largest and most diverse, increasing revenue from $500 million to $2.5 billion.  Among the channels:  FX, Fox Sports Net (two dozen regional sports networks), Big Ten Network, National Geographic Channel and Speed Channel.  He also oversaw the launch of Fox’s high definition, interactive television and on-demand content. Gardner also held executive roles at Atlanta-based Cox Communications, the nation’s fourth-largest cable operator and New York-based inDEMAND (previously Viewer’s Choice). In the five years just after college, Gardner had a career as a journalist and television producer, producing more than 1,000 hours of live television, achieving the second-highest ratings of any local newscasts in the U.S. (35 rating/65 share) and winning the prestigious RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast in the Nation. Gardner is on the board of directors for the Courage Campaign Institute, a Los Angeles based non-profit which seeks to defend and extend human rights through leadership-development training, strategic research and public education.  He was a member of President Obama’s National Finance Committee and is a trustee of the Economic Innovation Institute and Action Fund. Gardner earned his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1982.  At Brandeis, he was Editor of the weekly campus newspaper.  In 1989 Gardner earned an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance. Gardner is a runner and long-distance cyclist, having completed ten “century” (100+ mile) bike races.  He and his wife Karen have two children and live in Santa Monica, California.


Marty Shindler is CEO of The Shindler Perspective, a husband & wife consulting practice with Big 4 (C of PWC) professional service firm and top 5 (Sloan @ MIT) business school credentials. The firm has worked all along the entertainment and entertainment technology value chain, and as a result, has deep insight into the inner workings of the various industry segments and the many businesses and niches that intersect with the value chain. The practice consults on business, economic, strategic and operational matters in a diverse, but interconnected set of market segments and companies in areas such as development and previs, production, post production, distribution and exhibition for movies, TV and other content across a wide range of platforms, second screens and delivery methods. Mr. Shindler's unique vision and perspective provides clients with a first-hand sense of the direction in which the industry segments are heading and the challenges and rewards that lie ahead. Speaking engagements have included a wide range of industry conferences and events representing the many industry segments where the practice has been involved.
